  5. heyhowyadoin Says:

    OH….MY….GOD….

    what’s going on….

    this band is insanely good….

  6. heyhowyadoin Says:

the ONLY criticism i have about the rehearsals.com stuff is THERE’S ONLY TWO SONGS!!

man, i cannot wait to see him in concert…….

    **i think i’m talking to myself…

  7. shelley Says:

I love “Hell of a Day”…but I gotta say my personal tastes don’t quite align with all the jazziness of the version of “What’s Goin’ On.”

I’ve never been a fan of that kind (or much of any kind of) jazz. Plus, after reading all I did this morning at Gray’s about Marvin Gaye and that particular song…I feel this version detracts from the deeper course that runs through the lyrics.

Okay…all that said…I have one caveat that I have to add…and this may cost me some readers here…but…

    I. Absolutely. Hate. The. Saxophone.

Sorry, guys…but the sound of the sax always drills into my inner ear like a buzzing gnat. I give Jeff credit for being very talented…but…I’m just saying…

  8. heyhowyadoin Says:

hey, that’s cool shells….i’m not too fond of the harp myself….

    different strokes…

  9. Shrewspeaks Says:

    Dammit forgot to hotlink…

    Gab here

  11. shelley Says:

    thanks, hey.

you know, as the harmonica goes…there are certain styles that drive me nuts.

i’ve enjoyed almost every performance I heard from Taylor on his harp…however…Blues Traveler…not so much…it just sounds like noise to me.

My brother, Ben, loves songs with distortion…but to me that takes away from the song and keeps me from hearing the instruments or focusing on the nuances of the piece. Whenever he wants to share new tunes with me…I have to really fight to get past the “noise” ’cause I know that doesn’t mean a song is bad.

It’s funny. I love “Same Auld Lang Syne” by Dan Fogelberg…but to me…when the sax starts playing…it ruins the song…which, until that point, had been so endearing and sweet…then you stick a baudy sax solo in and blech.

    You’re right…different strokes.

  12. heyhowyadoin Says:

    oh shit…i LOVE the harmonica….

    i don’t like the harp…you know…those things the angels play……

    ha!

  13. Bobo Says:

Deep, DEEP sigh of relief…I have watched, life is good, all is right with the world…..

It was an amazing video (both songs), gave you the feeling that you were right there in the studio with them…it was definately just a bunch of guys getting together to jam, feel their way around the songs and find their groove…..I absolutely LOVE Taylor’s unpretentiousness….Hey dudes, this is ME, this is how I sing, how I look and I’m here for the music, SO LETS LAY SOME STUFF OUT THERE, see where it takes us!!

I understand your point of view tho Shelley…I had kinda hoped to hear alittle MORE of the voice and alittle less of the musicians…does that make me a bad fan?

None the less…I do love the man and his innate sense of himself/style/voice.

  14. heyhowyadoin Says:

just read gray’s message…..sorry your webhosts are such buttheads gray…..

but too much traffic in this case is a GOOD thing, no???

  15. shelley Says:

hey…you’re killin’ me…glad you clarified. LOL

bobo…i think you and i are on the same wave length about more voice on “what’s going on”…i know taylor LOVES to hear instruments…and to share the spotlight…but i really enjoy his voice more than a sax solo. Now had it been a piano solo or a string solo of some kind…I probably wouldn’t be so harsh on it. But then a piano or string solo in WGO really wouldn’t fit…so I guess I’ll be happy with what they did. 😉

  16. Squeebee Says:

Shelley…differnet strokes for different folks, I guess. I love the sound of the saxophone, and especially the bari sax. Not sure why, but there it is.

Gray, as inconvenient as this crash is, hopefully TPTB will take notice of all your time and work, and maybe things will get rolling sooner than later.

  17. Anonymous Says:

I loved them both! “What’s Going On” reminded me more of the music we hear him play in bar settings. I think that’s why it didn’t work at the AI concerts and it disappeared pretty quickly from his repertoire.

No matter what you think of this version, you gotta love the words! I quoted some of them this morning in an e-mail to a friend, when we were discussing Shelley’s “Trail Mix” thread.

The only thing that put me off a bit was the amount of make-up Taylor is wearing. I know this was made for commercial purposes, but still…

PS Gray’s site has a little addition, check out the song.

    bloo

(thought I figured out how to post with my name, it’s not working yet..)

  18. Mind Doc Says:

(Married to a sax player — sigh. Just sayin’.)

I think that what happens in rehearsals is different than the performance. I think, but am not sure, that there is more instrumentation focus during rehearsal — during performance, the vocals are stronger.

I can’t see the videos right now! Grrr!

  19. shelley Says:

Mind Doc…I’m sure if I heard your husband’s sax playing…I’d totally change my mind! 😉

  20. Jan Says:

I love the video of What’s Going On so much more than the video of HOAD because Taylor is being himself and well I just love it. I especially love the sax (I played one for 10 years and just bought one because I love that instrument so much). I love the harp too. I really, really love the harp. I saw a band, “I Can Lick Any Sonofabith in the House” at Threadgill’s one night and they had a jamming harmonica player. It was a southern rock band kind of like the Drive By Truckers but almost heavy metal too. I was so astonished that they had a great harp player that I bought 2 CDs. I don’t listen to them but I enjoyed the show for sure.

    Saxophone’s rawk!
    Harmonica’s rawk++
    Mandolin’s rawk!
    Dobro’s rawk!
Vocals rawk too and I just love music.

  21. DaniCalifornia Says:

You know, I just started to like the sax maybe a year or two ago. And the harp has always fascinated me, so I’ve always been a fan of that too. What I DON’T like, (besides of course, what everyone else said, there only being two vids) is the new version of HOAD. It’s too upbeat for me. That song is supposed to be meloncholy I think, and almost like you’re pondering over the events that happened. I think that the music fits with the lyrics.

  22. NOLAgirl Says:

Jeff was wearing a Save NOLA hat – awww.

It was fun to watch the videos – liked them both. Just itching even more so to see him on his own tour. 🙂

  23. baby duck Says:

This is a day I’ve been waiting for ever since Taylor was in his audition with Paula, Randy, and Simon in Las Vegas, and said, “Give me a chance, give me a chance.” When TrueNorth pledged on behalf of the Soul Patrol to give the win to him, for me it wasn’t so much about the competition or the crown, as it was about making sure he had his chance.

This is not music that’s meant to meet the expectations of customers in a Steak & Ale joint. It’s not music dictated by the genre of the week. It’s not a repetitious concert where he’s one of ten acts. It’s not a first CD where there’s more give than take this round. I think perhaps the music in the rehearsals is the closest we’ve heard to what Taylor would do, given a chance.

I’m taking it that this rehearsal is not of music that will be on the Dec. 5th CD. If HOAD and What’s Going On aren’t on that CD, then I wouldn’t expect to hear them on a promotion blitz. Surely not Oprah and Letterman and Martha. Those appearances are to promote the CD release, right?

So what are these “private events”? What road show? Where and when will they be performed as a live act? It would be so cool to go to a live show of Taylor just being Taylor.
