Luck Be a Monkbot Tonight… Kimmykins Meets Taylor at Mystic Lake Casino

Text and photos by Kimmykins

I went to the Prior Lake Concert that was held at Mystic Lake Casino in MN. My husband was out of town so I was on my own for the weekend. I was hoping to hook up with some people before or after the concert so I was active in’s Touristas thread for my town and was looking forward to the get together.

A bunch of us met up at the fireside lounge area that was adjacent to the hotel before the concert. While there I met up with Yours Truly (also named Kim) from the thread. We hit it off and have hung out since the concert.

Anywho, Kim was hoping to meet Taylor and get an autograph like I was, so we journeyed around the casino together after the concert. After a while we settled on sitting at the fireside chat area where we were hoping to run into Taylor after he returned from dinner after the show. While there we ran into two people from the Tourista’s thread: Penney and Angie. Kim had to leave around 11:30 p.m., but Penney, Angie, and I kept waiting.

Around 1 o’clock, a large white shuttle pulled up. Taylor and a couple of other people came through the revolving door. Penney approached Taylor for his autograph, a hug, and a picture. Taylor kindly obliged. I then gave him my Monkbot head to sign. He smirked when he saw the logo, autographed it, and then I quickly went back up to my seat. (Brian Gallagher had also been very amused with the Monkbot head. He got the biggest grin on his face when I handed it to him to sign.) After the swarm of fans subsided, Taylor looked at me. I told him to have a nice night, and he nodded his head.

After about 10 minutes, I grabbed my stuff and headed toward the casino’s card tables. Sure enough, Taylor was playing blackjack and managing to do it inconspicuously. Notme-monkbot-brians-sig.jpg wanting to disturb this and hoping to manufacture a casual encounter, I sat down and played some slots a few feet away. Then I got owned because the blackjack dealer at the table next to Taylor’s didn’t have anyone at her table and she concluded that I must not know how to play slots because I was just betting one line and one credit at a time. She called over to me to tell me that I needed to bet on more lines if I wanted to win anything. I bit my lip to keep from laughing while I took her advice to appease her. Taylor played for a while and eventually cashed out. Next thing I know he was literally standing next to me with his back brushing up against my leg. Here was my chance, my casual encounter. He had literally bumped into me. What do I do? Absolutely nothing…because I’m an idiot.

Thoroughly disgusted with myself, I decided to call it a night. I wandered aimlessly through the casino trying to figure out where I was and where the hell my car was in relation to me. I made my way to the fireside and Taylor was standing in the lobby with three girls around him. Taking pity on my dogs waiting for me at home, I walked out the door.

Sorry, but my heart starts beating more rapidly just hearing about being that close to Taylor!

Kimmykins, sounds exciting! I loved all the Taylor siting details. And, oh, by the way, how was the concert? I’m thrilled you got the monkbot out there again. Next Tuesday I will be representing in Columbus,OH.

I want all comments to be well-thought out and evoke healthy discussions and conversations.

Please…before you post…read the Monkbot Manifesto.

Remember…this is not a Taylor Hicks fansite. All kinds of people visit here.

  4. georgie Says:

    Sorry, Shelley.

Whoo-hoo! Good job at getting more face time for the Monkbot-on-a-Stick! He’s becoming iconic!

Actually, I think you did just right in the casino. You got to experience the neat feeling of observing the Taylor Hicks in a (somewhat) natural environment, and yet you refrained from pushing yourself onto him in an weird, uncomfortable way. The man got to conduct a little slice of life without “fan assistance” and I bet, as nice as he usually is, he was grateful to have that slice.

    Great experience, great recap!

Great recap, Kimmykins! I love that you got a smirk for the monkbot! It’s much better than if he screamed and ran the other way.

Don’t beat yourself up. You were very brave doing what you did, and very polite for not hassling him in the casino. The only reason I opened my mouth to him at all when I went was because it was a Meet & Greet and not a Meet & Shut-Up.

Ha…a “manufactured casual encounter”. I thought I was the only one that was that devious.

Honestly…I had a dream that I was out partying with Taylor and the band. The scene in the dream that I can still picture, is me sitting next to Taylor…we are joking around, laughing out loud, slapping (in a nice way) each other on the arm. And even in my dream, I’m thinking, “He has no idea how difficult it is for me to pretend that I’m not totally in awe of him”.

Sounds like you done good Kimmykins. I hope if I meet him, I don’t make a fool of myself.

    Vive le Monkbot! 🙂

You live to tell about it? Standing wtih his back against your leg…unbelievable. Gibberish is what I would have been spouting!

Looking back having the urge to meet him was such a strange phenomenon for me. And it’s not like I was hoping to get his number or something, I’m happily married. Very odd.

As for the concert. I would be very surprised if he plays at another casino when he comes back to MN. The band was great, but the casino was dry and standing wasn’t encouraged. As a result the crowd was very reserved during the concert. Right before the encore the usher guarding Tier A disappeared and the first two rows of Tier B flooded forward into the aisle up front. As a result everyone stood for the song and people were dancing. As he started to sing Taylor told us “You should have been doing this all night”. Don’t be alarmed though as I said the band was great, the concert was great, the atmosphere just could have been better.

Out of the concerts I’ve been over the years I have to say the sound quality at this one was impeccable. All of the elements were clear as a bell. I hadn’t realized that a concert could be like that. String Cheese Incident, Widespread Panic, The Others, RatDog, They Might be Giants etc. were all incredibly muddy in comparison.

Which brings me to an unrelated point, I bought In Your Time at the concert and while I had heard the songs before I hadn’t listened to them that often because I felt guilty listening to something I hadn’t paid for and I am absolutely loving the jam band sound that carries throughout that album. I think that if Taylor decides to go for a slow and steady career route that style could carry him far. If you like the song Son of a Carpenter, you should listen to some String Cheese.

    Q-MBOS is becoming iconic–LOL!

Kimmykins, I am totally experiencing that same, strange phenomenon! I’m happily married, but I have a strong urge to meet Taylor also. I don’t really understand it myself. I don’t need autographs or long conversation–I just want to say hi and thanks. You’re not alone in thinking it “very odd”.

  12. jenfera Says:

Kimmykins, I had the same experience at Foxwoods Casino. The ushers are such a bummer. I don’t think casinos are well suited for Taylor’s kind of show. I am looking forward to seeing him again in June in the more casual environment of the Cape Cod Melody Tent.

Thanks for the tip on String Cheese Incident, by the way. I have heard of them, but never listened to them. Now I will have to check them out.

Hi, I couldn’t even find the GC archives but then I found this place and it seems nice. Can I come in?

  14. leejolem Says:

Kimmykins, how sad is this–I got my hair cut and highlighted last night (3 highlight shades and 3 hrs), am going to get my eyebrows threaded this weekend and shopping to buy a new outfit. I’m sure TH could care less, but I want to look my best if I meet him. My husband just rolls his eyes at me. He’s got a crush on Allysa Milano, so I guess he understands a little bit.

Shasti, welcome! Monkbots are friendly and fun and don’t bite much.
